Who does it?

According to the National association for shoplifting prevention (NASP) the two smallest groups of Shop lifters is responsible for 95% of the loss to retail, these two groups are:

  • Professionals who make it their business to steal. Professional achieves an average personal annual income of 100 – 150K. They make up 3% of total shoplifters but cause 10% of total loss to retailers.
  • Habitual non professionals who steal based on social / personal pressure, the average theft amount may be small however they average 1.6 crimes / week and as a group constitute 27% of all Shoplifters. Due to the number of them combined with the regularity of their crime, this group cause 85% of retail losses.

With 95% of losses being generated by 37% of shoplifters the need for more focussed loss prevention effort is clear. Loss prevention Staff aren’t able to differentiate these 37% of people, so must focus on the entire population all of the time, allowing the 37% of experienced shoplifters to carry out 95% of the crime.

CapturePlan has developed Recon™ to address this problem.

What can I do about it?

CapturePlan’s Recon™ facial recognition service scans the face of customers entering your store and compares that customer’s identity to a database of known Professional and Habitual shoplifters, or ‘persons of interest’. On achieving a match, Recon™ sends an alert complete with the identity of the person of interest to your in-store loss prevention staff. The alert provides early warning to staff who can then more closely monitor or evict known shoplifters from your store.

Each Recon™ user enrols new persons of interest into the central Recon™ database, so that all new suspects and offenders are detected before they enter the store. This shared intelligence enables truly collaborative loss prevention.
